We need to talk about your ‘gut

Ever heard about someone being so nervous that they throw up?  What about stomach butterflies when you are excited about something, or falling in love, or even when you are feeling anxious? A hot area of research is the connection between your gut and your brain.

Studies are increasingly discovering that a healthy gut can help with mental health issues such as anxiety, stress and depression.  In other words a lack of support from ‘friendly bacteria’ could be a Debby Downer in your everyday life.  A healthy gut leads to a healthy brain and without the right bacteria your body can’t process the vital nutrients from food or supplements.

There are roughly 100 trillion critters located in the gut—mostly in the colon, where they play an essential role in human digestion. (Without them, we couldn’t break down the plant fiber we eat.)  Doctors and scientists have found that supplementing our diets with Probiotics can help keep the good bacteria in our bodies and increase our health.  In fact, research has shown that taking probiotics can help fight cancer, colds, constipation, and mental health issues.

Whilst I have a personal interest in this subject, I’m no scientist and can only point you in the direction of articles that have been of interest to me.  This doctor has first hand experience in the field and her findings are interesting if you would like more information:

Another study involving mice has shown that taking probiotics can help improve memory, a massive bonus for me as I have never recovered from the dreaded ‘baby brain’.

I have started several people I know on a course of these capsules.  If you decide to take the plunge I would be really interested to know how you feel as a result (if indeed different at all).  I’ve just started my course so will keep you updated after a 4 week period (if I remember!).
